National Health Service - Institute for Innovation and Improvement

The NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement supports the NHS to transform healthcare for patients and the public by rapidly developing and spreading new ways of working, new technology and world class leadership.

Great leadership at all levels in the NHS is required to achieve our ambition of delivering world class standards in health and health services to patients and communities.

We provide a range of interventions to help build leadership capability and capacity across the NHS:

  • The focus of the NHS Institute's provision for Boards and senior leaders is on leadership for improvement - inspiring senior leadership in order to transform quality of care. This offering forms part of the NHS Institute's wider support for organisations, teams and individuals to achieve transformation through quality, innovation, productivity and prevention.
  • The Enhancing Engagement in Medical Leadership Project develops and promotes medical leadership and engagement across the UK in conjunction with the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges.
  • Building Leadership Capacity recruits fresh new talent and develops high calibre individuals into innovative, accomplished leaders through a portfolio of three programmes, each of which uniquely contributes to the NHS talent pool: the NHS Graduate Scheme, Gateway to Leadership and the Breaking Through Programme.
