Senior Leaders

Develop a Senior Leaders Development Programme aimed at senior public sector leaders.

Due to be piloted in Spring 2010, the programme will build the trust, confidence and political acuity of leaders from across the public sector. The programme will be run by IDeA.

This new programme is a high profile example of Public Service Leadership's colloborative approach and demonstrates the commitment of the 11 public sector leadership academies to work together. We are sharing our learning to create an innovative approach to leadership development with a fresh focus on leadership of place, supporting improvement and the more efficient delivery of public services.

Vision for the programme

Current thinking on the vision for the programme is that it will:

  • Provide a unique alumni approach to the development of top leaders from across public services, including graduates from the senior leadership development programmes.
  • Maintain a clear focus on the process of development, rather than necessarily as a conventional style of programme.
  • Build on and reflect leading edge thinking on cross-sector approaches to leadership development, whole systems and adaptive leadership.
  • Address the challenges of working in partnership, across physical, organisational and at times psychological boundaries to deliver tangible changes in public services and make a real difference to the lives of local communities.
  • By working on the 'wicked' or intractable issues faced by top public service leaders, they will build the trust, confidence and political acuity as leaders in each other as they seek to deliver their objectives and serve people and places better.
  • Build leadership capacity across the public service through shared learning and development, knowledge capture and dissemination.
  • Be recognised as a national thinking resource and think tank on cross public service and public sector reform issues, with an ongoing action research facility by alumni and the publication of findings.

The details of the programme are currently being developed and will be posted on the PSL website over the coming months. This will include information on an open competitive tender process for prospective providers.

A workshop at PSL's inaugural conference will help inform thinking prior to further consideration by PSL at its away day in November.
